- Use young as salad onions or grow on as bulbing onions. Colour intensifies with maturity.
- Sow outdoors thinly where they are to crop, 1.5cm (½”) deep directly into finely prepared soil which has already been watered. Allow 15cm (6”) between rows. Early sowings may benefit from cloche protection. Seedlings usually appear in 14-21 days.For spring onions, no thinning is required, but keep well watered in dry spells. Regular sowings made every two to three weeks will ensure a continuous supply through the summer.For bulb onions, sow no later than April. Thin seedlings to 8cm (3”) apart. Harvest from July onwards. Harvest alternate spring onions from early sowings allowing space for the remaining ones to mature as bulbs.
